What to do in and around Heeg?

What to do in and around Heeg?

Sailing of course!
From Heeg the huge IJssel lake (IJsselmeer) is easily accessible via the Fluessen and Morra lakes, and then the old town Stavoren. Due to interconnecting canals from Heeg through open waters also the Frisian inland with its charming old villages and towns can be explored by boat. Heeg is a real water sports center. In the high season it is buzzing. However, if you just are outside the main ship lanes, you will experience that there is still plenty of room for casual and pleasant boating. Boating, sailing, canoeing, hiking, biking or touring in the car, this region offers everyone what they are looking for: peace, space, action and relaxation!

Ever wanted to sail on a traditional Dutch flatboat or eel bark? It is possible in Heeg and for a friendly price. See the sites of beurtvaart Heeg-Balk (sailing tour can be combined with a bike trip back) and the Palingaak Heeg

Ice Skating
In winter, when there is ice it is wonderful skating on natural ice in the area. That starts for the children already in the garden, where the leaning scaffold provides for an easy way to get to the ice. For those who want to experience the famous Eleven cities skating tour (Elfstedentocht), Heeg is close to the action: the cities of IJlst, Sneek, Sloten and Workum are not too far from Heeg.

Golf
At approximately a 15 minutes drive of the cottage you will find one of the finest golf courses of Friesland: the golf course of St. Nicolaasga or at half an hour the golf course of Lauswolt.

Cycling routes
From Heeg over the Frisian lakes and the inter connecting canals you are able to  sail the various villages and towns. These same sites can be reached by bike along the beautiful bike paths and lanes, some of which are connected by tiny bike and pedestrian ferries.

Recreation in Heeg
You can moor in Heeg in the center with your boat on one of the many terraces and have a  drink or a dinner, but you can also visit the sights of the village.

Other sports
Even if there is a day you do not want to spend on the water, your bike or the golf course, Heeg is a great place to get acquainted with the Frisian culture and the typical Frisian sports like pole jumping and kaets. The nearby city of  IJlst has an active pole jumping association where competitions are held regularly, and where you can also attend a clinic . In August you can meet on level with the kaets sport at the PC tournament in Franeker and the Freule tournament in Wommels. See respectively the sites www.fierljeppenijlst.nl and http:// www.knkb.nl

And when it rains?
On a rainy day many attractions are available like the Frisan Maritime Museum in Sneek, The Jopie Huisman Museum in Workum, the Unesco World Heritage site of the Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal and the beer and whiskey plant Us Heit in Bolsward.
