Heeg – the village
The place Heeg (Frysian: Heech) is a village in the municipality Sudwest Fryslan, (Netherlands), about ten kilometers south of Sneek and approximately one hour driving from Amsterdam. The population is around 2200.
Heeg is situated on the northern shore of the Heeg lake (Heegermeer). Eel fishing has long been an important means of livelihood. Until 1914 the eel was exported to London from Heeg; The eel fishermen of Heeg had their own mooring on the Thames near Tower Bridge. In the arms of Heeg an eel is depicted.
Nowadays Heeg is a known water sports center with several shipyards, marinas and a quay for the benefit of the heavy traffic on the Heeg and Fluessen lakes. These two lakes are together more than ten kilometers long and even offer the most spoiled yachtsman unprecedented opportunities. Heeg also has a decent nightlife. Besides several restaurants and cafes Heeg also boasts a nightclub.
